Elephant found dead in a drain, electrocution suspected
Korba | Correspondent: The body of an elephant was found in a drain in the Korba forest division on Saturday morning, adding to the ongoing series of elephant deaths in Chhattisgarh.
The incident has sparked concern within the forest department, with initial suspicions pointing to electrocution as the cause.
However, the exact reason for the death remains uncertain.
The incident occurred in the Geetkunwari area of Kudmura range within the Korba forest division.
Villagers heading to the forest to collect wood on Saturday morning discovered the elephant’s body submerged in the drain.
They immediately informed the forest department, which dispatched a team to the site.
With the help of locals, the forest department retrieved the carcass and began an investigation.
SDO Suryakant Soni stated that the circumstances of the elephant’s death are still unclear, and the origin of the elephant is also unknown.
Preliminary observations suggest electrocution as a possible cause, as the water level in the drain was too shallow to cause drowning.
Furthermore, there was no mud in the area that could have trapped the elephant.
SDO Soni emphasized that the exact cause of death will only be determined after the post-mortem report is released. Investigations are ongoing.
